Book Covers

They say, “Don't judge a book by its cover,” so a cover doesn't really matter

Forget the "don't judge a book by its cover" nonsense! Your cover is a silent scream for attention, a whispered promise to readers, the very first spark of your story. Don't let a bland cover bury your masterpiece. Fight for your words, your readers, and your dreams with a cover that ignites curiosity, demands to be held, and shouts your brilliance from the shelves. Make your cover the irresistible invitation to the world you poured your heart into, because every unread page is a testament to a cover that failed to do its job.

This page turned out to be a lot longer than I expected so I've broken it down into sections and then broken some of those sections into smaller pages.

Do you know how to recognise a good cover?

Paperback Book Cover Size

Paper books need a very high image resolution since they must be sharp when printed. Ebooks don't need quite as sharp an image but it makes sense to use a cropped version of the paper book cover.

Here's the cover images I produced for my book Imortality gene, paperback and ebook.

When you submit a book to a print-on-demand service they will provide a template file for the book cover based on the size you have chosen and the number of pages required. Here's the one provided for 'Immortality Gene'. It's 5,700 by 3,900 pixels in size.

Notice that the image area is surrounded by a large empty space and that nothing in the red outer area is likely to be printed. You should also take care not to put any text in the red area marking the book spine

Here's that red area with my cover image added. The actual image I used was 3,755 by 2,475 pixels in size. The blue lines are guidelines showing the red areas of the template.

Making an ebook cover image

Amazon say "Ideal dimensions for cover files are 2,560 pixels in height x 1,600 pixels in width. For best quality, particularly on high definition devices, your image should be 2500 pixels in height." The image produced for a paperback cover can be cropped to produce this.

A paperback book cover image can be cropped to make the cover image for an ebook.

This results in a 1631 by 2578 pixel size image. It's OK to make the image bigger than Amazon's 'ideal'.

Hardback Book Covers

There are two types:

  1. Laminated covers - This is where the cover design is printed directly on the hard cover. In essence it uses exactly the same process as paperback covers although the dimensions alter slightly. The print-on-demand service will provide a template for this cover to be designed.
  2. Dust jacket covers - a paper cover which wraps loosely around the hardback book. The dustjacket is larger than the book signature since it has front and end flaps which usually contain further details of content and author.

A dustjacket has 'gutters' next to the front and back flaps where the jacket wraps around the hard covers. Text in these areas wouldn't be readable. Again the print-on-demand service you use will provide a template to help design the dustjacket.

Can you help me out?

If you find these pages useful you can return the favour by downloading a FREE ebook from Amazon - even if you don't read it, it will help our rankings! I think you'll probably like it though.

It's the first book of a series of 9 books (so far) which tell the story of how life on Earth was saved from a cataclysmic extinction when a rogue planetoid collides with Earth in 7141. This first book deals with how humanity was made immortal, giving us the incentive to do something about an event so far in the future.

Take a touch of humour, add some genetic science and nanotechnology. Steep with conspiracy and stir in murder and despair. Season with romance between three people in a secret location. Garnish with morality.

The result is 'Immortality Gene', the first in a novel series by John and Shelia Chapman. The ebook of book 1 is FREE and available at multiple retailers

As an experiment I asked someone on the website fivver.com to make me a book cover for a short story I wrote. They sent me two covers for $5.00 Here they are:

The first, with a man and donkey, was not appropriate. The second had potential though. I searched for the image and found it on a site offering free desktop wallpapers. It was public domain. I customised it a little though to produce this final result.

I added rain and a character 'Alex' (aka Jack the Ripper). I was able to use the same background image in the other stories of the series.
