Let me remind you. There are two types of publishers you might consider; traditional publishers and maybe, hybrid publishers. There's also a third type of publisher, known as a vanity publisher, which you should avoid at all cost. Vanity publishers don't make money from books - they make their money from authors who are foolish enough to pay them thousands.
There are thousands of small publishers, many of whom are owned by...
There are five huge multinational publishing firms who you have no doubt heard of. If you manage to get published by them, then your chances of success are greatly increased. Each of these big 5 publishers has a number of subsidiaries known as imprints. I've listed the major ones here. I've also added a link to each publisher showing their submission policy:
Publisher | Imprints | |
---|---|---|
1 | Penguin Random House | Ballantine Books Berkley Dutton Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group Penguin Books Random House Riverhead Books Viking Books |
2 | HarperCollins | Ecco Books Hanover Square Press Harlequin Harper Harper Perennial Park Row Books William Morrow |
3 | Simon & Schuster | Atria Publishing Group Emily Bestler Books Gallery Books Scribner Simon & Schuster |
4 | Hachette Book Group | Grand Central Hachette Books Little, Brown and Company Mulholland Books Perseus Books Twelve |
5 | Macmillan | Celadon Books Farrar, Straus and Giroux Flatiron Books Henry Holt and Company Picador St. Martin’s Press Tor/Forge |
As you will see, none of these big five accepts direct submissions but it's worth reading what Penguin Random House have to say on this.
Remember, traditional publishers make their money by selling books. They won't accept any book where they feel they can't make money selling it.
Beware of a firm called 'Author Solutions' which has links to some of these publishers. They manage a number of vanity publishers. Remember - a REAL publisher won't ask you for any money.
If you are in any doubt, check out the publisher at the Writer Beware website and do a Google search for the publising firm name in quotations and the word 'scam' e.g. ["Author Solutions" scam] (without the square brackets.)
If you find these pages useful you can return the favour by downloading a FREE ebook from Amazon - even if you don't read it, it will help our rankings! I think you'll probably like it though.
It's the first book of a series of 9 books (so far) which tell the story of how life on Earth was saved from a cataclysmic extinction when a rogue planetoid collides with Earth in 7141. This first book deals with how humanity was made immortal, giving us the incentive to do something about an event so far in the future.
Take a touch of humour, add some genetic science and nanotechnology. Steep with conspiracy and stir in murder and despair. Season with romance between three people in a secret location. Garnish with morality.
The result is 'Immortality Gene', the first in a novel series by John and Shelia Chapman. The ebook of book 1 is FREE and available at multiple retailers
