Whether you plan on being traditionally published or plan to self-publish there are some things you need to know and do first.

The big advantage of traditional publishing is that the publisher will do a lot of the work for you. They will make sure it is professionally edited, design an effective cover and will format paper books and ebooks to a professional standard before making them available at retailers. They will also give you some guidance on how you can promote your book.

First a Warning! Literary Agents Publishers

With self-publishing you are on your own and must do all the work yourself, although you can farm out things like editing and cover design. You are however, in complete control and the timescale involved is much shorter. Royalties will be higher - if you know what you are doing.

Whether you are traditionally published or self-published, you'll need to promote your book. You can expect some guidance from traditional publishers but those who self-publish are on their own. Book promotion is by far the hardest task an author faces.

Cleanup your book file
Starting a new book
Set details and upload your book files
Preview the book
Produce the book cover
Set the price
Get a proof copy
Approve and publish

Step 7 - Get a proof copy

You can now get a proof copy of your book either by downloading a PDF of it or as a real paperback copy. I make a point of always odering a paper copy since book covers are often not quite what you expect. However if you are in a hurry, then by all means examine the PDF version.
